Current Information:

HM Submarine E22 was unusual inasmuch as she carried two light sea-planes on her outer casing which could take off after the submarine had submerged in calm waters and they remained floating on the surface. It was hoped that they could be used to intercept Zeppelins. On 25th April, 1916, HM Submarine E22 was on surface passage in the North Sea, trialling this new procedure when she was sunk by a torpedo fired from the German submarine UB-18

Of the crew of 33 only two survived and were taken prisoner by the German submarine. Among the dead was Herbert Puckhaber.
